Vinçotte – Kiwa is now recognized under the CertifHy EU voluntary certification scheme for RFNBOs
Renewable hydrogen is a cornerstone of the Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III), which is all about boosting renewable energy in the EU. Renewable hydrogen and its derivatives, like ammonia, methanol, and methane (known as Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin or RFNBOs), are key to this plan.
These fuels are crucial for cutting down emissions in industries and transport, helping Europe hit its goal of being climate-neutral by 2050. By then, it's expected that 25% of the EU's energy will come from renewable hydrogen.
Vinçotte – Kiwa is now recognized under the CertifHy EU voluntary certification scheme for RFNBOs. CertifHy is a recognized EU scheme that promotes the use of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives. As a certification body, Vinçotte ensures that hydrogen and e-fuels from non-biological sources meet the strict criteria of the Revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED III).
RFNBOs are fuels made from renewable electricity. RED II has specific criteria for RFNBOs to make sure they help the EU meet its renewable energy goals. To qualify as an RFNBO, renewable hydrogen must be made from renewable electricity and cut CO2 emissions by 70%. If it meets these conditions, it counts towards the renewable energy targets.
For plants that aren't up and running yet, CertifHy offers pre-certification services to help projects get ready for certification, even before making final investment decisions. Pre-certification helps economic operators in the RFNBO value chain prepare for initial or annual certification.
To get initial certification, economic operators need to register and sign an agreement with CertifHy. Annual certification includes an audit of the operator's management system. They also check traceability, mass balances, sustainability aspects, and greenhouse gas emission calculations. A site visit is crucial to ensure compliance.
Certification shows that the operator can correctly issue Proofs of Sustainability (PoS). Twelve months after the initial certification, re-certification is needed to keep the certificate.
